Financial Shape in 2008

Crystal’s blog Money Saving Mom has issued a Financial Shape in 2008 Challenge.  This is a year long challenge in which you are to live on less, pay off debt, and save more money this year!  I’m in!  We purchased a new house this past year after having lived in a parsonage for 6 1/2 years, and we forgot all of the little expenses that go along with purchasing a new house!  Therefore we incurred a little more debt than we would like.  Our goal is to become debt free in the next 12 to 18 months (with the exception of our home)!  Again, as with my weight loss goal this a very ambitious goal, but I am determined to do all that I can to make this a reality!

I have been working on our budget diligently since January 1st, but due to privacy issues, I’ll not post it.  I will be attempting to return to the envelope system, and I’m going to try to cut our food budget down while still fixing healthy weight conscious meals!

I would really like to contribute to my husband’s income by doing something from home, but as with most homeschooling moms, my time is very limited.  If you have some suggestions, feel free to post!

Budget Helps!

dsc00616.jpgYesterday I went to both Walgreen & CVS and look how much I bought!   I bought:

  • Pert Plus (25.4 FL OZ)
  • 2 Suave Professionals Humectant conditioner (14.5 FL OZ ea.)
  • Herbal Essences Conditioner (23.7 FL OZ)
  • Sunsilk Beyond Brunette Conditioner (9 FL OZ)
  • Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets (10 caplets)
  • 3 Excedrin Sinus Headache (24 caplets each)
  • Excedrin Migraine (24 Geltabs)
  • 2 Energizer Max AAA Batteries (8 count each)
  • Schick Quattro for women (3 count)
  • Schick Quattro Midnight (1 razor, 2 cartridges)

Now for the really exciting part.  My out of pocket cash was only $2.60!  That’s all!  I used 2 $5.00 ECB’s and put $3.32 on my Walgreen’s gift card (roll-over from last month).  Then $19.49 in ECB’s printed out!  I’ll also get an additional $2.50 placed on my Walgreen’s gift card!

If you are not familiar with how to shop frugally at CVS and Walgreen, check out Crystal’s  Money Saving Mom blog.  She has written a very informative post on each!  Click here for Walgreen, and here for CVS!

Debbie Dewitt Words to Live By Family Print

Crystal’s challenge today is to post a Frugal Friday tip along with a family fun time for our “Making Your Home a Haven” challenge.  We are to post about what our family does which doesn’t cost a lot of money, but brings us closer together.

First of all, we always eat dinner around the dinner table.  Yes, there are occasions that we eat out, but we always do so as a family and 99% of the time we eat at home around our dining room table.  No TVs, no radio, just our family spending time together.

As far as recreation, in the summer we take walks, go hiking, or play basketball in our driveway.  Now that the evenings are getting shorter and colder, we’ve moved our family time inside.  We now have game nights, movie nights, or we work a thousand piece puzzle.  For the most part, in the evening when we are all at home bedrooms are off limits.  We prefer to spend the time together.  Children are a gift from God, but these gifts grow, they mature, and they eventually (depending on God’s will for their life) leave your home to begin families of their own.  The time we have with our children is but a brief moment, we need to cherish it and make the most of it.

DVD Giveaway

Challies is giving away a DVD collection!  modern_parables.jpgClick on the widget to the right or this link to enter!  This month’s sponsor is Modern Parables. Modern Parables is “an original Bible study curriculum designed for people who like movies. It is the first in a planned series of film-driven studies on the parables. The films are uniquely designed to parallel the original parable and thereby drive the viewer back toward the Biblical text. The 12-lesson study (with 6 additional lessons on cinema and theology) uses short dramatic films that explain Jesus’ parables using the particular strength of the cinematic medium. In other words, just watching the films helps teach the historical, grammatical, contextual and interpretive elements in the parables.

This contest will only last 7 days, so enter quickly!
